What is an Accession Number?
An accession number is a unique identifier assigned by the SEC to every filing submitted to the EDGAR system. Think of it as a filing's "serial number" — it permanently and uniquely identifies a specific submission.
The format is XXXXXXXXXX-XX-XXXXXX:
- First 10 digits: The filer's CIK number (padded with leading zeros)
- Next 2 digits: The year of submission (e.g., 24 for 2024)
- Last 6 digits: A sequence number for that filer's submissions that year
For example, 0000320193-24-000123 is Apple Inc.'s (CIK 320193) 123rd filing submitted in 2024.
